Respect in Pittsburgh
I may be opening a Pandora's box here, but I think it is time for everyone to be a little more respectful on this forum. I can think of 6 - 8 people off the top of my head who were based in Pittsburgh and/or heavy posters on this forum who have been removed and at least one who was temporarily banned. Most of these removals I have agreed with, some I have not. In contrast, I can only think of one person from the Denver/Colorado forums, and one from Omaha/Nebraska who have been removed.
Lest you think it is all sweetness and light on these forums, let me give you an example of some active threads there.
Sticky: Colorado and the West is running out of water . . .
Do you regret your move to CO?
Does Colorado Hate Highlands Ranch?
Denver or Seattle?
What Is The Worst Town In Nebraska?
Reasons I hate Omaha
Downtown Omaha not vibrant enough
PROOF,that Omaha is still a "Redneck Town".
People can discuss these topics, and others without insulting each other, making personal attacks, psycholanalyzing each other (at least not very often). It would be nice if that could happen on this forum, too. There have been times when I've just quit posting on this forum (which probably made a lot of people happy). So have others. That is one solution. But it shouldn't have to be that way!

Maybe it's just a fact of internet forums...since we can't see each other face to face, it's easier for the darker side of human nature to come out. People are generally more civil in face to face discussions. But then again, not always...it's not possible to throw a chair or pie at someone via the internet.

Hey, K, were you out here when the pie throwers were tossing pies at various political people? I think Mayor Willie Brown got pied...
But I agree -- we are supposed to be adults -- maybe we can act like it. We don't have to agree, but we can disagree nicely.

Moderator cut: Any issues with moderation should be taken to Marka or Yac.
Across this country, issues like illegal aliens and housing costs seems to be huge problems, these are problems that we do not face here.
I think people need to realise that these are forums, getting into a heated discussion with one another is simply a part of being on a forum. I think it has little to do with the fact that we have "no respect" for one another, I think from discussions with people outside the area that Pittsburgh seems to be isolated on numerous problems the rest of the country faces today, so our narrow views come from our limited exposure to problems the rest of the country is having. Lets not even get into the fact that Pittsburgh has its own slang.

I'm someone who is pretty much the same in person. People are often astonished how open and honest I am. I'm the kind of person who, if my district manager walks in and asks how things are, I'm going to tell him/her just how things are. I love to help people out, am very opinionated, very blunt, etc.
I participate in alot of other discussion groups dealing with my other interests, such as mtn biking, cars, etc. One of the first two discussion groups I posted on were the former Usenet, now Google groups. It was a mountain biking group and a group on my favorite band, Oasis. There was no moderator present at all, so things got very ugly. I actually got ahold of someones employer because of personal attacks that person was making against me and bragged about being at work while doing so. So I'm a seasoned veteran.
This is the definitely the most tightly governed forum I've ever been a part of. I have most definitely been banned for telling one or more of the moderators exactly what I have thought of him/her. Like I said in an earlier post, keep out the foul language, keep the offensive pictures away, and racially motivated attacks, but let us be ourselves.

I think we can deal with our differences w/o mocking people, making personal attacks, using heavy sarcasm, etc.

I'm all for being honest and even blunt sometimes to make a point, but you can ALWAYS say anything tastefully.
There's a big difference between being honest and being inappropriate.

I think also we need to look to what "words" we use that can be taken the wrong way...words like paranoid, whiny, too sensitive can hurt someone, very much and therefore cause them to lash out in anger...not that this is ok here, but I think its human nature...I am speaking in general terms here..I know I was wrong to get upset here too.
