Hi all! I have recently moved back to Pittsburgh after a few years away. I'll be living in Dormont and am looking for suggestions for "veggie friendly" grocery stores and restaurants in the area. I'm familiar with a lot of places in the east end, and I've searched yelp / urban spoon, but am looking to get some "insider info."

Specifically, I know a lot of restaurants have vegetarian options but those usually seem to be smothered in cheese, so I'm looking for some suggestions for healthy veggie options in Dormont and more broadly in the south hills area.

It looks like there are some Asian / Middle Eastern / Mexican restaurants in the area that probably have good options. I've heard good things about Casa Rasta and am excited to check that out.

I was happy to learn that there is a Trader Joe's in South Hills village and am interested in other health food / specialty food shops in the area.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

The Kabob-G Grill in Castle Shannon has good middle eastern food. I've eaten there several times and have always enjoyed it.

I had also heard good things about Casa Rasta, and was really excited to try it. Then I tried it. Maybe I should have ordered something different, but the tofu dish I ordered tasted overwhelmingly of burnt soy sauce, which screams amateur home cook to me. The mango/coconut rice that came with it was good, but I had the burned taste in my mouth all night. It was also very expensive for what we ordered. I think we paid around $40 for my bowl of rice with tofu on top, one "special burrito", a beer and one non-alcoholic drink. I wouldn't go back. But, YMMV.

Mekong's on Potomac. The daughters of the owner who run the front end and deliveries have always been great about making most of their entrées' vegan, and they're good about steering one clear of anything that isn't (most of their soups and wontons).

I've no first hand experience, but I've heard good things about Tong Garden in Brookline, will have to check it out soon.

Silk Road in Caste Village is a bit over-hyped, in my opinion, but they do have an interesting menu with some extensive vegan options.

Dewalt's health food place on Potomac is a life safer on Sunday morning when your craving a good scramble but out of tofu.
