Brightwood is a new label to me for that area of North Side, but I've heard the Sugar Top area referred to as "Sugar Top" for more than 20 years.

When did Shadeland (where Horace Mann is) become Brightwood? Maybe the Brightwood organization is just taking on Shadeland? Anyhow it's in the Shadeland neighborhood. I don't remember when Woods Run turned into Brightwood but I've been hearing the Brightwood name for over 10 years now.

The Brightwood Civic Group has existed for 29 years.

A lot of Woods Run was ripped out for redevelopment, the remaining portions were re-designated. Sort of like on the other side of North Side where there are still houses in the East St. Valley but are now designated "Spring Hill" or "Perry hilltop", even though they are obviously in the valley.

Is there/was there a difference between Shadeland and Brightwood? I've actually never heard of "Shadeland" on it's own, just "Marshall-Shadeland", meaning the same thing as Brightwood.

"Brightwood" just sounds stupid. Anything having to do with trees is overused.

Isn't it a portmanteau of Brighton Road and Woodland/Woods Run Avenue?

Shadeland was always the area starting around Woodland and extending to the Shadeland bridge. I always thought of Marshall-Shadeland as the area between Woodland and Marshall, extending down to 65. Brightwood is the Woods Run valley to me.
