I'm looking at an apartment in that area which is near the south side park. I'm nervous because the area literally borders Mt Oliver & Allentown. I like taking walks and dont know exactly where id walk (besides the park) We are also going to be on the bus line. Is S. 18th safe to wait for a bus at any time of the day? thanks for any input.

That's kind of an isolated area. I wouldn't worry too much about spillover from the hilltop hoods, and I wouldn't worry much about safety on that part of 18th since it's a pretty well-used road. The 51 bus goes up 18th and from my experience, especially late at night, you get some "interesting" characters, but most of them aren't going to be getting off in the slopes.

I would, however, talk to a few of the neighbors on that street who can give you a better idea of what to expect within the little enclave. If you like to walk, head down to the flats where you can explore the neighborhood streets, the Carson business district, or the riverfront trail.

Southside park is one of the places I've yet to explore, but it doesn't look too impressive from the map views? Maybe someone else can chime in on that. I do remember reading this from a few weeks ago though which would make that walk more pleasant for you. Green planners to rack brains with South Side in mind - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

My son's friend has lived further up the hill for quite a few years without incident.
