They have a purpose. Since our roads are narrow, trucks and busses need to cross over into the other lane when making a right turn. If you stop too far forward at those intersections, you may cause a traffic jam.

True dat, but many are located at intersections where it is totally unnecessary. Places where there is either plenty of room or so little traffic that the possibility of gridlock is remote at best. And we are supposed to be arguing, right?
