When we gutted an attic we made the mistake of not getting a dumpster, and I used the "smuggling" method to get out the old plaster and lathe. There was about 25 bags of trash in all. I took them out over three weeks, putting 1-2 bags of trash by my neighbor's house instead of ours.

Not suggested.

City trash will take just about anything. We did a lot of renovating with just big garbage bags.

Same experience here for an entire floor and stairwell of carpet and padding, City of Pittsburgh guys took it no problem. Spread it out over a few weeks.

Dumpster is the cheaper option. Renting a truck is also a better idea than paying someone to haul it away. Depending on how much stuff you have to haul away it can get expensive. Speaking from experience.

Dumpster, but you usually are limited to how much time you can have one if you're working on a larger project. In the past I've bought the Home Depot "Bagster" bags (which hold waaay less than they say they do) and loaded them up over a few weeks. At the end of it, I just dragged/shoveled the bags into the back of a Uhaul truck, took it to a dumping station ($50/ton - was about 2-3 tons for a full kitchen, living room, hallway, basement gutting/remodel). All in all I spent about $350-$400 for what would have been much more for a dumpster because of how much debris I had.
