Moving to PA in a few months and would love some insight from people who live there. Husband is relocating and his main office is in Delmont. He works for XTO Energy/ Exxon Mobil so he travels to different locations. Anyways... I visited for a few days during the fall and fell in love with the beauty. Need some ideas of towns to tour when I come back. Have 2 smaller children in elementary so safety and a good school district of course important. I love the idea of Ligoneir but worried it may be to small. Looks beautiful with a charming walkable downtown, parks, and a public pool. But I've read the commute is hell during the winter because only one road in and out??? Need some more places to research please. Thanks in advance

Aren't these your old threads under a different username?

Relocating from TX to Western PA...need advice please

Latrobe or Greensburg??

If not, that means the wife of your husband's coworker blazed this trail. You might want to check them out.

Greensburg is pretty wonderful in most respects. It's the county seat and there is a rather vibrant downtown. There are lots of beautiful old homes there, too.

Ligonier is an easy commute even in the winter… it's not lots of traffic in this area… Downtown is wonderful, but it is small. But then again, I think Greensburg is small as well (we used to live right outside of NYC, then outside of Philly, then outside of Boston… so those are my references for size…).

Latrobe has a very good school system, but not there's not much to see in the diminutive downtown… but there's lots of VERY nice neighborhoods in Latrobe where you can easily walk.

Greensburg is a nice place, but again, small downtown…

In general, Westmoreland County is more rural, so you won't have too many towns with a walkable, vibrant downtown… You almost need to chose what is the most important to you and your family. Good schools, vibrant downtown or access to nature/parks..

Pretty silly... especially when Route 30 and PA711 intersect in the heart of Ligonier (4 roads right there!) and there are plenty of secondary roads to boot.

While we love Ligonier I can't see how anyone could live there without going stir-crazy because it's so small. Yes, it has a Giant Eagle and many other daily conveniences, but, as I said, it's small.

Greensburg is very much to my liking, and if it wasn't so far away from Pittsburgh I'd have already considered living there by now since it's also slightly closer to both of our families in Eastern PA.

IMO, Mt. Pleasant is probably the most charming town in Westmoreland County but even smaller and more remote.

Mt. Pleasant is much bigger than Ligonier. The population is 3.5k. Ligonier's population is 1.5k. Mt. Peasant is less remote too because it's near the turnpike, route 119 and route 70. It's only 7 miles to New Stanton and 11 miles to Greensburg.
