I'm taking a girl out for lunch soon and I was wondering what kind of activities there are in the north hills (Ross Township/McCandless/etc) besides shopping. I was thinking we'd go to one of the restaurants along McKnight like Taj Mahal or one of the Mexican places and find something to do after. The only things I can think of off-hand are the laser tag place or hitting up a local park.

North Park is a great local resource, with golfing, boating, swimming and other activities available.

North Hills is a huge place. It has anything to offer that any large suburban area has. What are your(pl) interests? Try Ross Park Mall, which is right across from Taj Mahal.

Kniess Miniature Golf on Babcock Blvd. I believe there is also a mini golf course at/near North Park.

I'm more of a home body, but I enjoy nature and places with history. I'm definitely not a browser, which is why shopping/a mall would be toward the bottom of my list. I'm not sure yet what she's into, but I plan to find out. I like the mini-golf/rent a canoe ideas so far.

It's a little off-topic as it's outside of Pittsburgh, but something like visiting Laurel Caverns is on my radar though probably not for a first date.

Well there are things like the mall, movies, restaurants, ect that most other places offer as well. Nothing really unique to the North Hills. If you want the standard 'Murrican lineup of strip malls, chain restaurants, and big box stores then you will not be disappointed.

As far as unique things in the North Hills, I would suggest checking out North Park - its the giant elephant in the room. Rent a kayak and enjoy the lake then grab lunch at OTB at the Boathouse. They have a really fun yet casual menu. There are also batting cages and lots of hiking trails. You could also take a nice hike in Falls Run Park. Its an easy mile loop to a nice waterfall.

Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve would be another nice spot for an easy hike.

I don't recommend a boat for a first date, what if it isn't working out and one of you wants to leave?
