Just because they accept used items doesn't mean they are giving them directly to people. Many nonprofits accept used clothing donations and sell the clothes to thrift stores to get cash for the nonprofit.

"Free Store
we receive surplus and donated goods and redistribute them to neighbors in need. what began as a braddock project grew to serve residents of all of allegheny county." Free Store 15104

Jay talked to them, and they stated that they accept used clothing and housewares from individuals, which are the aforementioned "donated goods." Since their whole a shtick is redistribution of goods, it is probably a safe bet that they give the donated goods away, for free, to local people in need.

See if Catholic Charities will take them. They are involved in resettling refugees from several countries.

I heard back from Free Store 15104 this morning. Here's what they had to say:

Quote:
Jay,

The Freestore is entirely FREE. Clothes arrive, are sorted and hung, and "shoppers" come in and take them to their new homes. We serve residents from everywhere and no one is turned away. We also have partnered with several social service agencies and serve those clients as well, including clients with mental health needs, foster system and case worker clients.

We are entirely volunteer run and operate out of three cargo shipping containers, on an (what was previously) abandoned lot.

The Braddock Freestore! We accept used items as well, in newer condition. A little of everything except furniture because of limited space.

We were just selected by Pittsburgh Magazine as the "best use of surplus goods" and we currently serve close to 400 folks a week, from all of Allegheny County.

A friend of mine always recommends donating clothes to theater companies too if you're just giving them away. They get costumes and your clothes get to live over and over again in various productions.
