They'd be useless in Pennsylvania, which only requires rear license plates.

Except, in PA, cars don't have front plates.

The root cause of many accidents is dumb/careless drivers - you'll always have those people & accidents no matter what speed limit is set.
So you feel accidents can't be avoided if people were to drive at a slower rate? Really?

Heck, why have laws at all? Lets just recommend that people don't steal or murder, I'm sure that will work out.

For the most part it actually would work out, but there are some bad eggs out there. Not many, but some. I think people that live in and around Pittsburgh know they don't enforce speeding in the city, so it is like there are not laws against going fast on residential streets. I see some crazy things on the roads while riding my bike around. People passing cars on the right on Highland Ave come to mind. Going over 60MPH on Penn Ave around Bakery Square also comes to mind. People daily driving over 55mph on Washington Blvd as it is a highway. Oddly, that doesn't bother me that much because there are so few cross streets and almost no cyclists would dare ride on that stretch, but if one does, I really feel for them as it could mean death. People drive down and up through the Zoo at some crazy speeds and they have to use their brakes going up hill to negotiate the bends in the road. I always laugh at the brake lights coming on and thinking how low that person's IQ must be to not even be able to see a bend in the road ahead that they have to use brakes going up hill. Too funny. Then the people crossing the Highland Park Bridges at 70 mph and slamming on their brakes at the end to get in a line of cars. They ended up making no time at all. It actually is funny to watch and provides a lot of laughter during my time on my bike.

I just feel if people slowed down 5mph in the city, it would be so much nicer for everyone and that includes people in cars. You can't make time on city streets unless it is in the middle of the night.

The "powers that be" set the speed limits in Pa/Pgh. Until that changes, licensed drivers are permitted to drive up to and that mph. As far as changing or enforcing the speed limit law, you may want to talk to the "powers that be".

That's not what I was saying.
Was just pointing out that many accidents happen because of dumb drivers.

Me and my kid once almost got ran over by a driver texting in a 25-mph neighborhood.
The speed limit could've been 1 mph, but it didn't matter if that guy insisted on not paying attention to the road.

They do use radar. They just have to write the ticket up a different way.
