and in PA, for that matter. S/O to the honorable judge for the big decision. #TeamYellowCab

Why are you giving the judge a shout out? Did you have a problem with Uber and Lyft providing healthy competition?

I just read the article. It's not over. Uber and Lyft haven't given up.

I don't think that I can express how I feel about this without violating City-Data's terms of service and getting myself banned. Lets just say that I'm not happy about this.

The mayor's response:
Quote:
We will not let PUC shut down innovation without a battle. Ride sharing is worldwide -technology does not stand still. PA PUC must change.

OK OK - I was kidding. I agree with you guys, pretty ridiculous. Yellow Cab basically is a monopoly.

I would not mind if that monopoly Yellow Cab provided good service and half of their drivers were not jerks or crazy. I worked in the hospitality industry and have heard too many stories about people behind stranded for hours in neighborhoods that are a five minute drive to Downtown, but too far to walk. I have dealt one one with Yellow Cab drivers. There would be a line of cabs outside of the William Penn waiting to take business travelers to the airport around from 3-7 PM. It was first come first serve. Sometimes the hotel guest would just want to go to the Strip or South Side. The drivers are banking on strictly airports outside of the William Penn on weekdays around dinner time. You say "Hey, take me to the Strip" Many drivers either rant and rave in front of the customer or speed away saying, "I just got a call".... Liars!! Then the next driver would get mad by getting stuck with it and give us a hard time, and sometimes speed away also. Now the tourist has a real good impression of Pittsburgh and it's taxi service. I understand the disappointment of a cabbie waiting in line during prime airport hours only to get a short run. However, anybody that has ever worked for tips knows that you have good days and bad days. You have to have a short memory. That cabbie can take a short run, come back to the hotel and get in line again and get $100.00 for the next airport run. That would have paid for two runs plus the fifteen minutes it took to go to Station Square where he got twenty bucs. Some days you kill yourself for peanuts. Other days you go through the motions and have low stress and make out like a bandit. I understand looking out for #1, but cabbies work for the customer too, not just themselves. This is not all cabbies, but too many of them are like this.

uber and lyft meet such a high level of customer demand. It is virtually impossible to get a regular cab on a weekend in pittsburgh. These ride share programs have been keeping up with demand quite nicely and it will be a shame if the city loses them.

The first night I was in Pittsburgh last month, I saw three guys from New Jersey who were trying to flag a cab after spending an evening downtown. I could tell they were from elsewhere by their accents. When I asked them and they told me, I said, "Unfortunately, cab service in this town--," and one of them blurted out, "It sucks!" before I could complete the sentence. For some reason, Uber's website was down as well, but a random guy who was driving by made some money when he offered them a ride.

Overall, not a good impression for Yellow Cab to leave. Now those guys have probably told all their friends in New Jersey how bad cab service is in Pittsburgh.
