The best one is 25% off on top shelf vodka if you can prove you have grandkids visiting for more than three days.

Rent and housing is high. I guess if someone got into a complex for older individuals...

I am puzzled that other residents sit here and say how cheap Pittsburgh is (maybe 5 years ago) but currently the real estate prices are up. A one bedroom in a good area can start at $1200 a month.

It's pretty attractive to retirees for several reasons:

1. Lots of things to do when you're retired, from museums to book clubs, volunteer community work, libraries, classes at local colleges and universities, etc. You'll never be bored and lots of activities are free. Oh, and I forgot the casino.

2. If you don't want to drive or can't anymore, bus and rail transit is free, and the ACCESS system is a shared ride service funded by the PA Lottery that takes you wherever you want to go for a nominal charge.

3. Seniors get a break on property taxes, and PA doesn't tax retirement income. And the PA state income tax is very low to begin with.

4. You never have to worry about medical service, since there are top-notch hospitals.

5. If you live in the city, you can walk to a lot of places and can know your neighbors.

6. It's a relatively safe place to live.

7. It's got a generally good quality of life - has big city amenities without the hassle.

Many of my neighbors are retirees including a few that moved here for retirement. They all seem to have a grand time of it.

Yes she does live in the area. You can read a lot about different things that are available on their website.

http://www.alleghenycounty.us/dhs/olderadults.aspx

My mom is 91, in a wheelchair, and right now the big thing is that she is part of the OPTIONS program. Through it she has an aide who comes to her house 4 hours a week and assists her with getting in and out of the shower and does light housekeeping. Because she meets income requirements that program is free to her, but it is open to any senior needing some assistance with daily life, with a co-pay based on income. Between that, Meals on Wheels and ACCESS, she can maintain a bit of independence. She goes to her hair and doctor's appointments on her own and she is very proud that she does that. My siblings and I also do a lot for her, but I don't think that she would have lived long had we followed a doctor's advice to permanently put her in a nursing home 2 1/2 years ago.

There is also a rent and property tax rebate program for seniors. Again, it is income based, but she receives a bit of a rebate that makes it possible for her pay her property taxes and keep her home. That is also from Lottery money.

Up until 4 years ago, she and her buddies would spend a lot of time at the local Senior Center. She was part of a card club that met there, played and had lunch once a month.

ACCESS and OPT which are have been very important for my mom for years. She never drove and my dad was unable to drive starting in 1997. Without those services, they wouldn't have gotten around much.

The tax-exempt status of pensions is a big plus for some as well, although that applies throughout PA.

Hey, those golf course communities are pretty awesome if you love to golf (and many of them have a broad mix of ages).

I'd rather live near a golf course than right on one, though. Balls flying into yards/breaking windows are not something I ever want to deal with.
