Commonplace fills that role currently. Aldo roasted their own for a couple of years before they sold to Orbis.

I could give you a really long-winded explanation (because, yes, I have an old business plan for that too!) but suffice it to say there's not a significant market for $16-$22/lb roasted coffee or $3.00 12 oz cups.

I don't know if this is still true, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is. Back in the early 2000s, Pittsburgh led the country in per capita consumption of 3 lb cans of supermarket coffee.

FWIW, Crazy Mocha uses Kiva Han coffee. I'll leave it at that.

Matt at EaM has talked about roasting at some point.

No one mentioned Crazy Mocha in Bloomfield, a place I discovered last week. Pittsburgh needs to get Stumptown for sure.

I hang out and work in Crazy Mocha in Sq Hill occasionally. The coffee is ok and its a nice place to deliberate and type, but I'm under no illusion that I'm drinking great coffee. Biscottis are tasty too

It's a popular brand, but not among the light/medium roast crowd as Peet's doesn't offer that. All dark (or as they call it "deep") roasts.

21st +2 for using good quality milk for cappucinos. I have to say I'm perfectly fine with a bag of la prima.

Are there any roasters in the PGH area? Obviously, I'm not expecting Seattle-area 20+ roasters but it is nice to have a local area place or two -- better shot at fresher beans and possibly a little cheaper. Roasting my own is impractical although I can understand why people might take pleasure in doing so.

This used to be the case, but they offer a few medium roasts now, at least at my Peet's here in Colorado. They usually have one medium roast and one dark roast brewed and ready to order at the store. Not sure if the new Peet's stores on the East Coast are different.

They left LaPrima, 19 Coffee, Zeke's and KivaHan off that list. There are a handful of other really small guys.

The only one that's attempting the level of an Intelligentsia/Stumptown is Commonplace, although they're aways away from achieving that. The rest are catering to mid-market or lower.

A big part of the problem is that a roaster needs wholesale customers. And in pretty much every case, the local/regional wholesale customers these roasters have just aren't interested in either paying more for their coffee (and brewing equipment) nor interested in learning how to brew it better.
