I've posted this enough times that you'd think more people would know this by now. Swissvale's crime has been trending downward. The sections of Swissvale in Regent Square, and bordering Swisshelm Park have low crime rates, and are very safe. Virtually all of the crime in Swissvale is in the southern most section near the Rankin border. As long as op keeps their search north of Church street, Swissvale could be a decent option.

I highly recommend the Wilkinsburg portion of Regent Square.

If they can find anything in their budget, I would agree. However, they need to be aware that just about every rental unit that Regent Square Rentals has, is not in Regent Square.

Apartments are still pretty reasonable there. My friend lives in a fairly nice two-bedroom for $850.

The OP has a two-year-old and didn't mention that schools were a concern.

My son is 1 and schools are not a concern at this time. We did find a rental on Harrison street in what I believe is swissvale or regent square. Does anyone know aboutt that area?

That section of Swissvale is not in Regent Square, but it is a very safe area.

We also saw some property online in bon air, which I am not very familiar with? Looks like it would be easy access to 51.

Bon Air has a very flexible border, sometimes locations described as "Bon Air" are actually Knoxville or Carrick.

And it isn't a real easy trip out to West Mifflin from there.

For an urban experience, and being close to West Mifflin, some of the safe areas of the city of McKeesport might be a suggestion. I think its pretty safe in the area above Tom Clark Chevy off of 48, and the Tenth Ward is grungy but not dangerous.
