We live in a small, brick house in Highland Park. We have been searching for a brick repointer for almost two years. Several repointers (5+) have looked at our house and all have promised to "send and estimate" in a couple of days' time. None have sent the promised estimate. We asked the last repointer why it was that no one would give us an estimate. He claimed that our house would be "easy" to do and that he would sent us an estimate in a couple of days - another estimate that we didn't receive.

Does anyone know why we can't get someone to do the work?

Same issue here for drywallers, electricians, and when I was looking for deckwork. People are looking for a quick job that they can charge thousands for, no one wants to do a decent job for a decent pay.

Check out craigslist, I found a pointer from there recently, dont have his number around or I would provide it.

Basically in Pittsburgh anyone talented and skilled can pick their work. There is so much work to be done, plumbers/electricians/repointers look at a job and basically decide whether it is worth it or not. Now, if you want to pay top dollar, that's another story.

I had the same problem! I was however able to find a company that responded with an estimate very quickly. He was courteous and on-time!

I really don't know if the price was out of range, it seemed higher than I thought it should be, but honestly I don't know that much about the work. Anyway, if you're interested the company name is Pyramid Masonry and Restoration. They are in the city of McKeesport. I can provide the phone number if you cannot find it! Hope that helps!

In the same boat as OP. Was hoping to get it done before it got cold, then gave up, bought a tube of Quickrete, chiseled out what I could easily, filled in with the tube mortar. Will chip it out in spring, by which time I expect to be prepared to do it myself.

If you live in an older brick home (pre 1920ish), make sure that the person who repoints your bricks does NOT use Portland cement. Older brick requires a softer mortar, otherwise the bricks will be destroyed over time. I have seen cement used as mortar on old homes many times.
