I don't think this is a horrible place to date but IMO a lot of guys and gals here have really silly approaches to dating confounded with ridiculous expectations in a mate. Seems to be a Pittsburgh thing to do. Sure there are weird guys and gals around the world, but this city is full of otherwise rational folks that seem to be their own worst enemy when it comes to dating.

I recommend singles (especially older ones and transplants) check out MeetUp groups, not just the singles ones but also interest groups. Great way to meet folks with common interests. I preferred MeetIn and enjoyed just socializing, attending events or doing activities with other singles. There are probably similar groups on Facebook or elsewhere on the net, but now that I'm happily married not really my scene anymore.

I met my husband here and several of my friends have met and married someone in the last five years.

There is another thread that points to Pittsburgh's tolerance of sexual orientation. I don't see the same consideration made to singles or couples without children. The main question is always, "When are you going to get married?" or "Why aren't you dating anyone?" The second question is, "When are you going to have kids?" I feel bad for some of the residents here to see them squirm under the pressure.
This is another legacy artifact of the the Steel bust and ensuing exodus of people that peaked in the 1980's. Everyone who was unattached to a family and financially capable left the area if they could. It is only within the last 5 years or so that this trend has finally reversed, and evidence of this reversal is obvious all over the trendy areas of the city, especially if you are in your 20's.

If you are in an older demographic and in a non-trendy area, the changes might not be as noticeable yet, but you should still have no problem finding people that aren't obsessed with creating a family in you hang out in the right circles. And those areas will eventually change as well, but they will continuously lag behind the leading areas of the city that are experiencing a higher rate of gentrification and turnover.

Touristexplorer281, many girls smoke and drink when they are single and some will actually quit. It is part of being single and it could be the places you are going to. I am surprised that there are so many that do smoke because most guys will not date a girl that smokes. New York City, Miami, and especially DC have way more women than men so the odds would be stacked in your favor.
