Looking for advice. We're from a very nice bay area community, and considering a transfer to Pittsburgh area. Kids are almost into high school. We're looking for REALLY good schools (think Palo Alto, Mill Valley, Piedmont, etc). Which areas/schools should be on our list? Thanks so much for your help. We never thought we'd leave CA, but change is good, no?

Mt. Lebanon has good schools.
If your kids are creative, the creative and performing arts high school downtown is great. They'll have to audition to get in, and you have to live in the city. The class size is small, teachers care, kids get city bus passes to ride buses to school and all over the city afterward. Alderdice in Squirrel Hill is a good school in the city as well. Sorry, but I don't know as much about suburban schools. Many of them strike me as HUGE (North Allegheny, for example). |

Since a commute isn't an issue, Upper St. Clair is a great area with beautiful homes and lots of space. If I didn't have to get to both the City and Beaver County regularly, I would probably live there...

Thanks all for answering questions on this thread. The firm we're considering is NE of downtown (about 10-15 miles out). Commute is a factor, but not as important as schools. We'd want to live in a community (most likely a suburb) with a college prep high school. Strong math/science is a priority. What's the best public college prep high school in the greater Pittsburgh area, and where would you live to send your kids there? Is there a really good college prep Catholic school?
Thanks again! |

This one is easy for me....Polish Hill! Easy access to downtown and a nice huge unnecessarily obnoxious and large church, works for me...Pittsburgh has so much potential, it's time the rest of the globe realizes that.

As for excellent public schools. North Allegheny is very nice but also HUGE. Quaker Valley is a smaller school and quite good as well. Also look at Fox Chapel(NE of downtown!), Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebo, and Peters Township. Throw in Squirrel Hill's Taylor Allderdice if you're interested in city living. |
