I am moving to Cranberry Township this summer for work. I am moving from Philadelphia where there are plenty of great Black barbershops. I need to find a barbershop that is REALLY good with black male hair. Are there any in the Pittsburgh or surrounding areas that are worth taking the drive?

wpipkins2 is our resident classy African-American male who admittedly likes dressing up and looking good, so I'd imagine he's also your go-to guy for advice on great local black barbershops. There's one on Penn Avenue in Wilkinsburg. I made a gift delivery there once for a prior employer, and the atmosphere in there was awesome. I think it might be called Christyles?

One thing Pittsburgh has is a wealth of good barbers. Not sure about the Cranberry area though. The Cultural Elite barbershop in downtown Pittsburgh is a full service salon. The owner (Brandon) is very good. There is no less than 10 Black barbershops packed into Downtown Pittsburgh. Warner Center, US Steel Plaza, Park Building, Warner Center, Smithfield Street to name a few. The Natural Choice barbershop in Oakland is full service as well. The east end, southside, northside, and west end of town is full of black barbershops. There is this 80 year old white barber in Highland park that will fade the ish out of your head though.

Dreamz in Homestead is a beauty salon, but they have a great barber on staff named Reece. The fringe benefit is that you can mingle with a bunch of ladies while waiting, instead of a bunch of ugly dudes!!!

There is "VIP Styles" on Smithfield Street. ALWAYS busy, so I would conclude they have regular clientele (sp). They often have two or 3 barbers going at the same time, too.

A few years back, they didn't know what to do with me, though - seemingly white guy, but with Epstein Heyges hair - so the guy just made it look like Kid, or Play, whichever one had the wedge head.

Also, may I suggest 8326 Frankstown Road? There is a stand alone building that is a salon/barber shop run by a couple (VERY nice people, by the way). I forgot the actual name of the business (and hope its still there). I had two black friends - one male, one female, that would get their hair done there. The guy friend was fine with a regular cut there, and would ONLY go to that place.

Hey, welcome to the area, by the way!

wpipkins2? He's Old School like the Mills Brothers. Let's hear from Uptown Kid. He's got more street cred, bro.

Pretty hip for a BDWG.

No need to go past down town. Go to Aliquippa, Ambridge, Beaver Falls, Coraopolis maybe even Ellwood City these days. Or take 279 down to East Ohio St.

Admit there's a street element in a lot of those towns, but no more than the average shop.

I heard there's one beyond average black owned barbershop out in Sewickley @ Locast Pl.
VIP Stylez is good too & if its the same dude from Ike's Barber shop on the Northside than Homestead is good too
