Hi,
I am wondering if anyone can help me with a rough price for an addition in Pittsburgh.
My house is about 100 years old. It has a small room (5ft x 17.5ft) off the living room, that I would love to be bigger. It used to be a porch, so I am sure it would need torn down and started over. It has newer electrical, baseboard heating and 1 window. I would hope that those things could be used over. Also, my husband & I would do the drywall & plastering to save money.
Anyone have any clue what the pricing would be for something like this?

Thanks!!

I would need a lot more info to bid it. The money you would save by doing your own drywall would not be worth it. The labor on a small addition for drywall finishing is very small, if I was your gc I would advise against it.

Amber, if you were to add no more windows, but increase the baseboard heating and wiring in proportion to the increased room size, plus other incidentals, while YOU were doing the drywall, I'd say a lowball estimate is $15,000. That I think is the minimum, because I am not sure what expansion of the floor surface area would entail (concrete floor, hardwood, etc.?), and the estimate does not take that into account.

Plus, how much bigger - will it be bricked in? Framed? (My guess does not include that either!)

You might wanna try the True Cost Guide at Homeadvisor.com.

15,000. How is that even possible. I did an 8x20 front porch last year for 16,500

Thanks for the advise guys, I am looking to see how cheap I can do this. We have a new baby, (well not so new, 8 months) but we don't have room. She is still in our bedroom. Moving right now is not an option. I am not sure what would be needed for the floor either (concrete or wood). We would do the carpeting also, to save money. The house is aluminum siding, so it would be frame (not brick).
Does anyone has suggestions that would bring the cost down? We have someone coming this week for a price estimate.

How come? It very well may be the cheapest way to get more space.

Can you wait until next week? "My guy" gets back from a vacation with the wife next Tuesday. I can hit him up with this scenario and get some input.

Also, its "adviCe". (sorry!)

Yep. Once you have an actual estimate on the cost of the addition you can see how it compares to buying a bigger house.
