Hey, I've been considering that same place, since it's fairly close to where we live! I haven't toured, but I didn't get a great vibe over the phone. So it's interesting to hear your experience.

And I had kind of the same thoughts about the Keystone stars. In the performance standards document, it looks like a lot of it has to do with jumping through some regulatory hoops. But then there are some more substantive things, like the requirements for pediatric first aid training. As you said, it seems like having at least a couple of stars indicates that somebody cares about that stuff!

Brightside was okay as a temporary solution for us--it was the right price and had the scheduling flexibility and the hours we needed (we needed two days a week, and a lot of places have three days as a minimum for part time care), and I never felt my son was unsafe there or anything. It just wasn't as nurturing as I'd have wanted and the lack of a real playground made me sad because my kid loves being outside and is just really active. I wouldn't have wanted him to be there full time, but part time I could justify because the rest if the week he was with family and had all the playground time he could want.

Good luck on your search. It ain't easy, I know!

Have you considered The Children's Center in Oakland? It's affiliated with Magee and managed by Carriage House. If you're already on the waiting list at Carriage House, they can add you to the Children's Center list.

Thanks for the link; I heard rumors, but nothing concrete.

There's been a lot of turnover there recently, especially after the move. I wonder what's going on.
