South Oakland
hi, i'm thinking about moving to South Oakland next year, specifically onto Juliet and Cato. I was just wondering what everyone's opinion is on the safety of that area. Thanks!

South Oakland in general seems very crowded to me. Seems to be the biggest issue with crime in that area is idiots preying on unsuspecting college students as far as robberies/burglaries go.

Yeah, I go to Pitt.
My parents are kind of concerned because they were told the crime around those streets is significantly worse than in other parts of South Oakland, but I was under the impression that it's generally the same in all of Oakland.

Listen to your parents. 2 members of the SOC "South Oakland Crips" have a trial set for this Tuesday. Although quiet for some time the neighborhood may have a few shootings if the trial goes the wrong way. The Fraizer/Juiet to Fraizer/Dawson is known as a drug/gun "SOC" area.

South Oakland is usually quiet..I would say the "rough" part would be down around Fraizer St..where the playground is...Cato and Juliet are down by McGee right?...
Things have been known to occur in "rashes" from time to time but it is mostly quiet..
Dawson is quiet and residential, mostly students and long-time Oakland residents...
But this is still a city and you have to pay attention to your surroundings and some students have been known to invite trouble..leaving doors and windows open and
unlocked..basically careless things..saw one student walking with a checkbook flapping out on his backpack...walked by ground level apartment once, curtains wide open no one
home..anyone can walk by and see what is in the apt...
Most criminals are opportunists, they see a situation and take advantage of it...but I would say South Oakland has no more crime than the rest of Oakland..

I think the "safer" part of South Oakland is on the Blvd. side closer to the University...

Man guilty in South Oakland gang shooting
Saturday, February 02, 2008
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
A man police say is a leader of the South Oakland Crips was convicted yesterday of two counts of conspiracy in connection with two shootings in the neighborhood in 2005.
However, jurors acquitted Depaul Suzensky, 24, of firing a weapon into either of two occupied homes, aggravated assault and endangering a total of six people. Allegheny County Judge Kevin G. Sasinoski convicted him of a summary charge of criminal mischief.
Sentencing is May 5.
Two victims testified that gang members had tagged them as snitches and threatened them prior to the shooting. The case hinged on recordings of calls a co-defendant, Javon Q. Brooks, allegedly made to Mr. Suzensky and others from the Allegheny County Jail phone discussing the shootings.
Mr. Brooks, 18, opted for a nonjury trial, jointly with Mr. Suzensky. The judge said he'd announce a verdict for Mr. Brooks, on similar charges, Monday.

I was mugged in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh not too far from a bar called the Acadamy or something like that. A knife was stuck right below my ear. I gave up my wallet and then ran through alleys in shock eventually ending up on a main street where I found a Police officer. This was in 1991.
At the time I was going west for work with a group of guys. Two were originally from Pittsburgh so we stayed with them and their Pitt college friends for a few days before officially hiiting the rd.

The one good thing about oakland is that there are cops EVERYWHERE.
I think its best to be closer to the main roads (forbes/center/5th) where there are businesses and a lot of foot traffic most times of the day.
