I am looking into moving downtown and would love a new condo as an option!

Those are much more populated areas, which is the ultimate deciding factor in determining grocery store placement.

12,000 is enough to sustain a supermarket.

My daughter attended a youth music/art festival at the August Wilson a couple of week ago. After picking her up we strolled through downtown and decided to have a late night dinner. Every restaurant was packed. The place was jammed from the Convention Center to Market Square.

In 2010, you'd need to add together the populations of Downtown, North Shore, South Shore, Uptown, Crawford Roberts, and the Strip District to reach this total. People in the North Shore, Strip District, and Crawford Roberts have grocery options already. And the vast majority of the population of Uptown (which makes up half the total of "greater Downtown") is either incarcerated or in Duquense dorms.

The true population of Downtown now is probably somewhere in the range of 4,000-5,000. A substantive portion of this is probably Point Park students in dorms, who have limited reason to shop at a full-service grocery store.

The bottom line is we probably need to see a 200% increase in downtown population before a full-service grocery is feasible.

These seem to indicate that downtown's population is already over 12k

I've also seen a number closer to 3700. I wonder how they're defining downtown

From the article...

Quote:
Since 2010, 1,340 residential units were built or began construction in the Greater Downtown area, which includes the Golden Triangle, North Shore, South Shore, Uptown, the Bluff and the Strip District as far northeast as 31st Street. Proposed residential units number 2,229.
As I said, including Uptown and the Strip District in "Greater Downtown" is very problematic.

I had been living here four years before I realized the jail wasn't a Duquesne dorm complex.

LOL!
When that was built, our son asked when will we stay in the cool new hotel.
I told him I hope never!
