I don't recall reading anyone here who resides in the suburbs complaining about it.

Are you visiting older/dive bars? The majority at the bars out here in Cranberry are young people. Goes for most of the bigger bars/restaurants in the 'burbs.

There are some but don't you think most are geared towards hanging with old friends from high school? In general I would imagine a 20 something without kids would do better in a South Side/Shady Side/Downtown/etc.

Friends from high school hanging at bars are usually in their 20's. Old friends from high school don't often get together at the bar. Many are married and/or raising kids or are past the bar scene on a regular basis.

Only if they preferred city living. Hard for many here to believe, but not everyone does.

There are plenty of cocktail lounges, tap rooms and taverns in the Pittsburgh suburbs and many do a good business serving younger crowds..

Yeah, not many places left where you walk in and Tony Bennett is playing in the background to the same few older gents drinking Stroh's and "Arn".

Divorce. She kept the house and I moved down to Etna as I wanted to stay close to my son but couldn't afford to buy a house on my own in Shaler. If I could afford it, I'd still be in Shaler.

Some of the nicer suburbs feel woefully underdeveloped, verging on
rural. Take Fox Chapel for example: dark, windy country roads without shoulder
or sidewalk. It feels like being out in the country.
The fact that in some areas of Fox Chapel zoning restrictions require a minimum lot size of three acres might have something to do with that.

The reason isn't my concern. My point is, that compared to the suburbs of almost every major metro, Pittsburgh's are shabby, underdeveloped and/or depressing, and the roads leading into the city make access more difficult than it should be.

Rich, high profile people prefer to live this way. People like Teresa Heinz want to live on large estates without sidewalks and shoulders to park on to keep the riff raff out. Some people refer not to live in a bustling, walkable, central locale.
