When I lived in Lawrenceville, in a rowhouse built between 1880-90, we could hear every scream and curse from the neighbors next door.

With rowhouses it all depends on the quality of construction. Some cheap rowhousing has only wood, and plaster between the houses. Others are 3 bricks thick. With some older rows, the party wall extends above the roofline. These are of high quality construction that will not only block noise, but serves as a very effective fire break. Most rowhousing in Brighton Hts. is of the porchfront variety. Best way to find out is to ask the people on the block if they can hear noise through the walls.
