I have a close friend that taught at Norwin for a year and she claims that there are only like 4 black kids in the entire district and that they aren't very accepted.

I think North Huntingdon is a beautiful area, but I would go to Murrsyville if you want a more open-minded and progressive people.

Default Awesome Ranking List of School Districts

I know I'm a little late jumping in, but my husband and I just moved to Irwin (North Huntingdon) and have been really impressed with the Norwin school district.

I don't really know much about the drug use running rampant (not being personally involved ) but unfortunatly I'm sure you'll find drug use in any of the school districts you're looking at.

Diversity is DEFINITELY NOT something North Huntingdon seems to have much of. And it's not as trendy as say, Monroeville. A real kind of "Stepford Wives" mentality...

Here's a listing of the school districts in Allegheny and Westmoreland county. They are ranked as best-performing out of the 498 total school districts in PA. (As you can see, Allegheny has both THE best and some of the worst school districts in the entire state.)

Whereas something like greatschools.net will rate the schools, this actually ranks them against eachother. I found this really interesting and helpful when choosing where to relocate:

1 Upper St. Clair Township School District (Allegheny)
3 Mount Lebanon School District (Allegheny)
4 Hampton Township School District (Allegheny)
9 North Allegheny School District (Allegheny)
15 South Fayette Township School District (Allegheny)
17 Franklin Regional School District (Westmoreland)
18 Fox Chapel Area School District (Allegheny)
26 Quaker Valley School District (Allegheny)
27 Pine-Richland School District (Allegheny)
35 Bethel Park School District (Allegheny)
42 West Jefferson Hills School District (Allegheny)
44 Greater Latrobe School District (Westmoreland)
46 Greensburg Salem School District (Westmoreland)
48 North Hills School District (Allegheny)
50 Penn-Trafford School District (Westmoreland)
55 Kiski Area School District (Armstrong, Westmoreland)
58 West Allegheny School District (Allegheny)
60 Moon Area School District (Allegheny)
63 Norwin School District (Westmoreland)
72 Freeport Area School District (Armstrong, Westmoreland)
77 Hempfield Area School District (Westmoreland)
83 Avonworth School District (Allegheny)
97 Brentwood Borough School District (Allegheny)
101 Baldwin-Whitehall School District (Allegheny)
102 Montour School District (Allegheny)
108 South Park School District (Allegheny)
118 Plum Borough School District (Allegheny)
128 Mount Pleasant Area School District (Westmoreland)
136 Burrell School District (Westmoreland)
139 Deer Lakes School District (Allegheny)
140 Allegheny Valley School District (Allegheny)
143 Riverview School District (Allegheny)

I live in Penn-Trafford, but my daughter went to a preschool in Murrysville. Most of the children and their parents were very snobby and unaccepting. There were no African Americans in the class, but there was an Indian girl. My daughter was very good friends with her, and I know for a fact that she was made fun of on a regular basis for having "brown" skin. My daughter plays indoor soccer with kids from the Norwin Soccer Club. The people seem very nice, and I would guess that they would be more accepting. However, the black population there is very small. You might want to consider Gateway or Plum. Both have a much more diverse demographic, and there are a lot of very nice areas in both, especially towards the Murrysville boarder. Although neither of these districts can offer the quality of education of Norwin or Franklin, your kids will be much better accepted, which I think is even more important.

Thanks for the list Becca! Me and my wife just purchased a house two weeks ago in a newer development in North Huntington. I have come to realize, that if you are not living in Monroeville or Plum, then you will not get much diversity outside of those areas. We don't have any kids yet, but plan to have them in the near future and really hope in the next 6 to 8 years that Norwin will get more diverse. With the way Allegheny County is pricing themselves out with taxes, one would think a migration over to Westmoreland County would be inevitable. I am encourage that at least Norwin is a very good school district. As far as accepting to other races, from personal experience and experiences from other family and friends, there will be some accepting and some who won't accept those different from them in both communities. Unfortunate. Thanks guys!
