It would be during the colder part of the year like say Oct through March and it would be a 130K house TOPS and it would be somewhere where the property taxes aren't as high i.e. either in the city or in one of the outlining counties.

really depends on specifics.

might be 700, might be 1600. location, bedrooms, updates, etc all make this impossible to answer,

You would likely have to rent it for below market value because it would be difficult to find tenants than only wanted to stay for six months. I assume that you, or your family would be living there the other six months of the year. It's one thing to find people that only wanted a six month lease, but to offer no option to renew the lease, that would further dwindle down your prospective tenants.

I'm not saying it isn't doable, but it would be a lot of work for very little money. I guess this isn't about making money, it's more about offsetting the costs of owning a property that you are only living in for half the year.

They sometimes can be, but you would need to be very flexible with the length, and terms of the lease. That doesn't appear to be an option here.

Maybe a lot, and maybe not so much at all.

Depends on where it is, there might not be much of a market with a lot of snowbirds perhaps looking to do the same thing while they are down south.

I'm not sure what the market for the property would look like? Hospital patients looking to be near Presby while they are having their new livers installed? You have a too short of a period for college students or visiting professors.

Are there a lot of immigrants coming to Pittsburgh to work, but just during the winter?

There are alot of people who need short term leases, it comes down to location and how you market it. I know someone who has a fully furnished house in south park getting $1000 a week renting to an insurance company, they use it for families displaced by fire.

If Oct to March could become August 15 to May 31, you could do pretty well renting it to some responsible grad students from Pitt who don't need/wish to stick around in the summer and don't mind a commute. But the "how much" really depends on location.

How about this condo in Greenfield? Greenfield has easy access to Oakland, so it could possibly appeal to a college student. How much could I rent that out for if I rented it out for August 15 to May 31? Here's the link:http://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale...45_rect/14_zm/

I would first ask the agent if you'd be allowed to rent it out. Condos don't always allow that. Also, it doesn't look much like a condo. I'd ask the agent if that was a listing error.

Do you know that area? That's the run. The area is topographically interesting and it's not as close to Oakland as it looks. Take a drive down there and you'll see what I mean.
