I'm young (35) and need cataract removal surgery in both eyes. I am terrified. I don't know anyone my age or my parents' age who've had this procedure yet & so it's hard to know who to ask for advice. I'm looking for a skilled surgeon with lots of experience (of course) but also a surgeon & staff who are warm, friendly & take the time to answer your questions. I know I'll be a nervous wreck & have tons of questions & so someone with good bedside manner would make all the difference to me.

Any advice? I live in Pittsburgh but I'm willing to travel a bit outside of the city if someone is highly recommended.

Thanks so much!

Good Luck to you, when I had my lung biopsy, I went to 3 different Dr. Beforehand until I found one I felt comfortable with. If it was me, I would try and get an appointment at eye and ear hospital. I had a branch from a tree go in my eyeball years ago, they did the emergency surgery. It worked out well.

This group has been around *forever* and my mom worked for them about 60 yrs ago. Everyone in my family has gone to them, off and on, since.

You might want to speak with your PCP regarding the names you are receiving here. It is sometimes helpful to have a physician you are comfortable with, advise you regarding your specific needs regarding any referral. That being said there is a very skilled and recognized eye surgeon by the name of John Maher, in Shadyside ( parking garage connected) 532 S Aiken Ave, Ste 103, (412) 621-9060. He did cataract surgery with lens implants on my husband's eyes. My husband did very well, no post op problems. Great pre-op and post op care and education. Office very efficient and staff extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Best of luck to you!

No need to travel 300+ hundred miles for cataract surgery.
Pittsburgh also has Eye and Ear Hospital, with world-class doctors/surgeons.

I have had cataract surgery in both eyes, so I speak from experience. Select the Ophthalmic Surgeon who has performed the greatest number of CATARACT procedures over the past 3-5 years - particularly on someone in your age bracket. Don't hesitate to ask this question directly and walk away if you receive anything other than a specific number. The procedure is quite routine and pain free, if done by an experienced team. The 3 day recovery process (for me) was a bit uncomfortable, but pain free. If I lived in Pittsburgh and was in your age bracket, I'd probably look into the UPMC Eye Center - Eye & Ear Institute first.
