The currency of the GOP has been fear for a long time and according to that standard erieguy, UKYank, ny90210, goinback, fat lou, etc... are all very wealthy individuals. The prevailing evidence of this thread and what I gather from FB posts shows us that fear indeed is the easiest way to build a majority.

Not all Republicans are wealthy.

Gay marriage was recently made the legal law of the land by the US Supreme Court as the majority of the country did not support laws against it. Hence majority ruled.

The majority of states had laws against miscegenation. Many were repealed prior to the 1890's, others prior to the abolition of the practice in 1968 when all states repealed such laws as it was no longer politically popular & majority ruled.
Majority opinion on these things changed after the fact, not before. The Emancipation Proclamation was incredibly unpopular at the time, and you can find plenty of modern polls where people against gay marriage hold the plurality opinion (Bluegrass Poll: Majority remains opposed to same-sex marriage in Kentucky | Lexington Herald-Leader for example).

Discrimination and perpetuating injustice because your supporters support discrimination and injustice doesn't make it good or okay.

I'm sure there are some Republicans who aren't pissing their pants about the prospect of helping 10K Syrians in need, but they don't seem very active in this thread.

The 13th amendment outlawed slavery in the US & I'd disagree it was unpopular as no one lost a seat voting for its passage & the following election the republicans picked up another 21% of seats nor did it take long to enact via state ratification.

You keep dancing around the part where I say that it's morally wrong to support injustice just because your constituents believe in it. The US has never been a nation of mob rule.

Judges ruling on gay marriage in Iowa did lose their seat, by popular vote. You can look it up.

That's because I don't know any examples of things that were morally wrong but were changed while the majority of the people remained opposed to it. If slavery were outlawed in 1789 then yes; if gay marriage was put in place in 1950 then yes. Maybe in some localities it's occurred but not on any national level that I'm aware of. All such things waited until public opinion caught up because politicians nearly universally value reelection over taking controversial stands on controversial issues among their own constituents..

& yes mob rule can be dangerous which is precisely why the bill of rights & other amendments were added to make certain things much harder to change on a whim.
