The local murder rate hasn't been declining recently:

2005: 93
2006: 98
2007: 104
2008: 120
2009: 88
2010: 104
2011: 78
2012: 96
2013: 91
2014: 101
2015: 104

By my count, the number of murders fell slightly in the City proper however, from 59 in 2014 to 55 in 2015.

It's worth noting how racially polarized murder is in Pittsburgh. In 2014, only 16 white people were murdered county wide, 7 within city limits. In 2015, 19 white people were murdered county wide, with 5 within city limits (and not a single one in the East End).

Murder is almost all black on black. It has been that way in our region for a very long time. If it wasn't for that, our region would be wildly safe.

I hang out in the areas where the murders are going on. I grew up with the people who are getting killed. Many people on the forum can not speak on the violence, simply because their not around to know. Ask any cop, respond unit worker, ER professional, PPS teacher/school security/youth consoler from a rough school or any young person from the ghetto. The fate/realities for youth of most of black Pittsburgh is as bad as it was in 1993. Gang banging across America has evolved and it has evolved here too. The ways of the ghetto are different in several noticable regards than they were even 3-8 years ago... The current drug culture as a whole is different than it was in 2006.

Pittsburgh is no longer a place full of crack dealers on the corners, gang colors, graffiti and drive-by shootings between street gangs/ hoods who feuded from the early 90's-late 2000s. We're aproaching the peak of new era 2010's heroin epodemic/new school gang violence in the area... Now its as much social media as it is street culture. Kids as young as 13 regularly keep guns on them & shoot before choosing to fist fight. In all sides of town gangs are linking up to create super groups. These days it doesn't matter if your Crip, Blood, OG/G, 888, LAW/Hood, Westside Convict, Westside indepedent, etc., you can be cool/friends... Although this isn't solving the gang issues. In fact, it's causing more retaliation killing and spreading it to every Zone 1-6, the Mon Valley, Eastern Suburbs, Stowe Rocks, Kennywood, Monroeville Mall, Edgewood Towne Centre, etc!!! "Raw Dope" & "Smack" (regular heroin & heroin mixed with other chemicals) are most notable, but also all other drugs are the source of money that feuls most of these drug dealing gang members/non gang-affiliated dope dealers financies, but (gang/hood related) retaliation is the cause for MOST of the shooting...

There is a 'G Code' universally understood of "no snitching" in every real ghetto & an increasing number of semi-ghettos. Everybody & their grandma knows who's shooting @ who, but nobody tells the police. These days a snitch is not a person who rats on his homies, but any person who cooperates/testifies with law enforcement. Whats even more f'd up is that there are currupt/twisted/often racist cops who often do indeed tell the most dangerous/villainous/scary and convicted felon/gun crazy gang members, then they do what they do best. Across the county they've accounted for probably over 10 murders these since 2014.

What's interesting is the relationship to gentrification & public housing demolition, as much of the violence would not exist if these changes did not occur. This is the case from the Hill District to Mt. Oliver Borough to Clairton to parts of Monroeville/North Versailles to Marshall-Shadeland/soon SE Brighton Heights/Observatory Hill to large parts of Sheraden/McKees Rocks/Stowe/soon Coraopolis.
Like in Chicago, Las Vegas and other cities where there's been systemic change forced upon black neighborhoods/causing population displacement, the "hood politics" have changed both directly and indirectly due to gentrification/project demolitions. For one, it's moved gang members into new areas with & without existing gangs. And (b) now the 17-24 year olds run the scene as they don't live in as close confines/housing arrangements as the 24+ aged gangsters. So now you have 13-16 year olds with handguns and 17-24 with semi automatics & assult rifles. Just like a smaller scale Chicago.

The streets have politics, but no law & order besides violence. Violence does not discriminate against age, race, education, socio-economic class or motive of reasoning. That's why white on white and black on black murders are increasing all over the county.

I have worked in some really bad areas over the last 20 years, the people you have to look out for are the kids. The drug dealers and street criminals don't want to draw attention to themselves. The beggers want to fly under the radar. The young kids want to be hard-core and the way they get that reputation is by shooting at someone. Uptown kids assessment is spot on what I have seen.

The cycle in the culture of retaliation murder in 412 ghettos goes from
Crack epidemic & original gang rivalries
1989-1991 (non gang affiliated hoods/early gangs vs each other & earliest Crips & Bloods)
1992-1994 (climax/highest point of gang epidemic)
1995-1997 (downward spiral of 90's gangs)
---
Crack/Heroin & standing neighborhood rivalries
1998-2001 (total decrease in gang colors, but rival hoods still exist)
2002-2004 (gang colors returned, feuds continued but some projects closed)
2005-2007 (colors were less present than decade before, but many same feuds)
2008-2010 (2008 & 2010 were full of gang violence 2009 was only a drop due to police indictments)
---
Heroin & social media influenced beefs/new era alliances & rivalry
2011-2013 (murder itself & police indictments took 2000's gang bangers off the streets, section 8 landlords for rowhoueses across the city are demoted, rival hoods are now friends... New generation of gang members)
2014-present (melee of gangs with no guidance; UpTown X beefs with UpTown X; Addison Terrace's/De Ruad St Bloods beef with Allequippa Terrace's Blood gangs/Bedford Avenue's Blood gangs & certain Crips united with Bloods & G's are feuding with Crips united with Bloods & G's- which would never happen before 2010)

In from the time span of the 2000's to soon to be 2016 much has happened in the world & around Pittsburgh.
St.Clair Village, 3200 Arlington Heights, Garfield Heights, Broadhead Manor/Westgate Village, Reed Roberts Manor/Addison Terrace, Allequippa Terrace, Homewood South's Sterett St-Collllier Apts, Auburn Street Hamiltion-Larimer Apts & the 3 Pennly Park Hi-Rise Tower Apts were raised. South Side, Central Northside, East Liberty, Lawrenceville, etc have had gentrification... In turn, neighborhoods like Elliott/Sheraden/Marshall-Shadeland/Knoxville/Carrick & outside areas Mt. Oliver, McKees Rocks, South Swissvale, Penn Hills & East Pittsburgh have declined. Next Larimer/Garfield, Deutschtown/Manchester/Cal-bride Place & parts of the Hill will gentrify. Places like Stowe, Brighton Heights, Overbrook, Observatory Hill, Monroeville, Pitcairn, Braddock Hills, North Versailles, Turtle Creek, Munhall, Sharpsburg, Whittaker, West Mifflin & Clairton's Wilson District will all decline.

Was there not an article recently that said one of the most dangerous areas in the entire country is Northview Heights? And there were no murders in the past year? And 9 over the past decade...

Just moved to Perry North and it's nice to know there's only been 2 murders in the last decade.

Keep in mind, the statistics are only murders. Can you imagine how many guns have actually been fired and no one was killed or they were just injured? The amount of gunfire in the city is no doubt staggering. Most people miss their target considering none are trained at killing. It is amazing there aren't more wrong place at the wrong time in bad areas. I guess there was that poor guy in his car around Kentwood that was killed with a stray bullet. I suspect there will be more and more of this going on over the next decade. Looking forward to getting out of here at some point.

Oh well, enjoy the holiday season.

I just rode my bike across the Swindell bridge a few weeks back. I'm probably more likely to get hit by a charging bull than I am by a stray bullet. These areas are dangerous to the people who choose the drug lifestyle.
