If I was in Pittsburgh, I'd join you. Congratulations on your new home. Keep us posted on how you like the neighborhood, etc.

Smile reasonable Moving Company

This may come too late for you, but I have been using Debo Movers in Baden, PA (Beaver County area). Have had a lot of changes in the last year and have used them two times so far. they are VERY reasonable, have a great crew and are quite quick. Both times they came in under what they quoted ( by close to $200). Our next move - next week - is to Florida.

Good luck to you all! I have lived off and on in Pittsburgh for fifty years and it is a great place. LIke many others, just wanting a new change for teh next phase of my life.

Thanks, but I think we're pretty settled on "Two Men and a Truck"..... although we're gonna' use THREE men, actually!....LOL!!!

That, and a few MORE men, who have agreed to help us move the small stuff in boxes via my truck, to save time that we have to use the actual movers... my friends are working or beer, so I can't really complain!!

Working for beer is the best. I help my friends move all the time and they always ask me what I want in return. I always tell them nothing, I'm you're friend, but if you really want to show your appreciation just get me a 6 pack or two. Cheap labor rules!

Default Update: May, 2009

Hey, everyone!

It's been awhile since I posted, largely due to the plethora of activities surrounding the move.... unpacking boxes, doing yardwork and even clearing trees from the "Back 40" area behind the house...

I've uploaded some pics to my album on here (see profile for pics link) to give an idea of some of the beauty we now enjoy here, in Carrick.... yeah . . . I know . . . . that sounds like an odd statement, perhaps, but where we're at, there's a wild, wooded area directly behind the house that is home to many deer, rabbits and even a Tom Turkey who struts up & down the street early mornings as if he'd never even HEARD of "Thanksgiving"!!!

There is TONS of birdlife in our area, and we even have a full-grown Pileated Woodpecker who comes to the suet block every day.... the thing's as big as a vulture, and is the largest woodpecker still flying in this half of the U.S., according to a birding book...

There's no more of the noise or overt criminal element that was so visible over in Mount Oliver, and even though I'm less than a full mile from where we used to be, it's LIGHT YEARS away, in terms of sense of community and peaceful living.... they call our block "Copland", due to all the retired cops who live there and everybody has been tremendously friendly to us, as we've made our way into the community.

The parents and sister still have not yet sold their co-op back in Queens and, thus, are not here yet, but in a way that's a blessing, as it gives us plenty of time to unpack and find permanent places for stuff, before they get here... and with the winds last weekend blowing down about a 30-foot section of our fence, I'll need some time to get that fixed before they get here, as well.

I update to this degree of detail, for all those who may be considering moving either to Pittsburgh or to the Carrick neighborhood of Pittsburgh's South Side, in the hope that you'll consider this area and find something affordable, peaceful and EXACTLY what you were looking for, just like we did!!! - - You CAN have all the conveniences of city living including the proximity to downtown and Carson Street and still not sacrifice comfort or safety!!! Scroll back in this very thread, for the entire documentation of our move from NYC to here, and the year we spent in a rental as we found a house to call our own..... Many pictures of neighborhoods and houses we looked at are included in this thread, and I recommend it for anyone looking to move to Pittsburgh or looking at the South Side, in particular....

AND OF COURSE . . . . . .

Thanks again to all the Pittsburghers who gave us advice and were so helpful during the year-plus it took us to get here, find a house and all that.... if anyone ever has something bad to say about "Yinzers", I'll stand proudly to defend each and every one, because it is exactly the friendliness and open nature OF the Yinzers that have made this such a happy time for us, and we look forward to living long and fruitful lives here!!

Who knows, I MIGHT even trade in my Cowboys jersey for a nice, black -n- gold one...... SOMEday. . . . .
