There was three or four shootings on the news today and I was just thinking how many shootings are there in a year around here? It seems like it is all the time now and so different than in years past. Shootings aren't murder, so is there just a statistic for shootings? Seems like 2016 is really starting off super violently in our region. Will city growth continue or will this upswing change that? More people heading out of the city to be safer? I don't have a crystal ball, but was wondering what people think?

It sickens me that is seems like any time there is a disagreement these days someone is shot. Geez, what happened to people and value of life at all?

Good question. I asked a similar question about this not long ago and was told by many that the news is overreacting, embellishing, exaggerated, and these reports shouldn't be taken so seriously.

I'm not sure of the numbers on the locals vs locals, drug wars, gang violence, etc..., are but I do know many of the "average joe" are less tolerant and more prepared not to be a victim.

The Pittsburgh Police were on the news recently and reported 189 shootings last year in the city. That was considerably higher than 2014, but there were fewer murders.

Could be true. I guess we shall see over the years. A ton of shootings with morons doing the shootings, so the percentage of deaths are low because they are dopes.

Shootings are on the rise for three reasons... Heroin, gang rivalries and the fact that the current generation handles their problems by busting guns not by balling fists (inter personal disputes/domestic violence)

[quote]"Shootings jumped to 189 from 148 (28 percent), and calls for shots fired rose to 3,059 from 2,330 (31 percent)."[quote]

That's 3,059 mainly the following: The North Side long standing hoods and declining neighborhoods; Homewood/East Hills/Larimer/Lincoln/Garfield; Beltzhoover/Knoxville/Allentown/Arlington/Carrick; the South Side/Strip District/Bloomfield on the weekends; Sheraden/"Greenway"; Hazelwood/Glen Hazel; Chauncey Drive/Skyline Terrace/Middle Hill and parts of Sugar Top & Lower Hill...

“From that September date we investigated 24 murders, we cleared 15 murders,” said McLay. “Our citizens are coming forward and they are providing information in turn makes their neighborhood much safer.”
The average age of a murder victim in 2015 is 26-years-old, dropping from 31 in 2014.
“Violent crime is impacting on young people, and it’s not just impacting people on people in the criminal lifestyle---it’s completely innocent bystanders,” said McLay.

In the past 4 months or so, there has been a large increase in residents moving out of the city to the exurbs. The current direction of the local government is only going to continue to give people a reason to move out of the city and county.

Well, I suppose rents will go down soon and we will return to Rust Belt "real Pittsburgh" shot and a beer status in Shadyside soon. It was a fun ride while it lasted.
