Yeah. Stick to sailing. Anyone that's always concerned about $$$ isn't cut out for the cost of boating...and make sure to post video when you hit the big water.

For a city of 100k, it's not that uncommon to have one gay bar. Reading doesn't even have one.

I believe my native Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area, with well over a half-million people, also only has one gay bar.

Back on-topic, I adore Erie. The last time I was there I spent several hours taking a relaxing walk around the entirely of the Presque Isle peninsula. I spent some time on the beach. I observed unique wildlife. Unlike here in Pittsburgh where everyone seems to be paranoid people up there raced me to be the first to say "Good morning" when we passed each other on the trail.

The Tom Ridge Environmental Educational Center is great, too, and shows a free documentary about Presque Isle that I highly recommend watching to learn more about the ecology of the local area.

Like, PreservationPioneer I also enjoy Downtown Erie. Part of my usual outing involved a frappuccino at the State Street Starbucks, lunch at the now-defunct Pufferbelly, and some goodies at the also now-defunct Pulakos Chocolatiers next-door. I've heard great things about the French cafe on the square for brunch. I'm personally hoping Melt Bar & Grilled of Ohio fame will open in Erie the way we've been exporting Primanti Brothers, Crazy Mocha, and Mad Mex there. If that happens we will turn our annual visit to Cleveland for my "parmageddon" sandwich into an additional trip to Erie and keep our dollars in PA.

Large swaths of Erie's city proper are indeed depressing due to blight, neglect, and poverty, but Erie is nowhere near the same level of socioeconomic distress that has enshrouded McKeesport, Braddock, Youngstown, Flint, Wilkes-Barre, etc.

Unfortunately it did last September. It was not because of lack of business, it was that the owner's spouse passed away and she did not want to continue running the restaurant by herself.

I prefer to make a day trip of it. The hotels are surprisingly expensive up there.

How cheap are you looking for? You can find places from $50 and up.

They must be more expensive in the summer. A lot of places were booked up and I couldn't find anything for less than $120 when i was looking.

You certainly have to plan a bit ahead of time if you want the cheapest rates. Erie is extremely popular in the Spring and especially the Summer.

I have not been to Erie in probably about 15 years or so but I remember it being depressing. I wouldn't mind taking a trip there and seeing how much it's changed though.
