You should have no problem taking that stroll during the daylight when the aviary is open. From the Westin, its across the 6th, 7th or 9th St. Bridges to the lower north side, you can stop at the Warhol Museum on Sandusky about half way to the aviary, if you're into that kind of thing.

You could also go through Point State Park and see the Fort Pitt Blockhouse and fountain and then cross the pedestrian bridge attached to the Ft. Duquesne bridge. That takes you to Tony Dorsett Drive, take that straight and turn right on Martindale, turn left on Merchant, go straight and you're basically at the Aviary.

The Fort Pitt museum is in Point State Park and is pretty cool too, but they do charge admission.

Absolutely, I did it.

The Mattress Factory isn't much farther, and the Warhol Museum is on the way (if you take the 7th Street/Warhol) bridge.

Just sayin'.

And if you make it as far as the Mattress Factory, you may as well walk a couple more blocks and see Randyland.

Folks have mentioned the T if you don't want to walk or if the weather's lousy. You can also catch the No. 8 bus (Perrysville), which stops at the Warhol and very close to the Aviary at the intersection of North and Federal (it's a very short ride from downtown).

Second vote for the Mattress Factory and Randyland.

Those are both neat and odd places, and they are very close to the Aviary. Hitting those three would be a fun afternoon, if you have time.

Then you could also swing by El Burro on Federal Street for some delicious Carne Asada Fries.
