Please help...Our family will be relocating from Michigan. My husband has accepted a position in Cranberry Township, and I am looking for employment at one of the hospitals in Pitts. Can anyone recommend a good place to rent in the middle? We are looking for some place child friendly as we have a 2 years old. We would like to stay under $900 per month. Any advice is greatly appreciated. We have never even visited Pittsburgh.

I don't have a specific suggestion but I will throw out a general thought. I know a few couples in a similar situation: one person working in the city (usually Downtown or Oakland, the latter being where a lot of the hospitals are located), and the other in a suburb (it could be Cranberry, Monroeville, the South Hills, etc.). It turns out that for a lot of them, it ended up being better to live closer to or actually in the city. That is basically because usually the person working in the city could use public transit to get to work, and the other person could do a reverse commute driving out to work and back, and thus avoid a lot of traffic. Conversely, if you do it the other way around (live well outside of the city), the person coming into the city might have to fight traffic for their commute.

Of course, there are various reasons why you might prefer living outside the city despite the commuting implications. But I thought I would mention what I had observed among the people I know in this situation.

You might want to consider the area around Avalon/Bellevue/Ben Avon. It has easy access to the city and you can get to 279 or 79 north to Cranberry very quickly. This area is full of large, older homes that have been converted to apartments.
I would also look at Ohio Township, Sewickley, Ross...really anything around the 79/279 area.

Stay in Cranberry. You couldn't have picked a better place.
