Eight county parks getting exercise stations
May 13, 2016 9:29 AM
Allegheny County is in the process of installing outdoor exercise stations at eight of its parks.

The county parks and public works department, with support from the Allegheny Regional Asset District, purchased equipment from Xccent Fitness, a Minnesota firm that designs and manufactures equipment with the goal of improving strength, cardiovascular endurance, stretching and balance.

Stations in Round Hill Park, Settler’s Cabin Park, South Park and White Oak Park have been installed and are available for use now. The fitness stations in Boyce Park, Deer Lakes Park, Harrison Hills Park and North Park will be ready by June 15. The proximity to playgrounds in most of the parks allows parents to get a workout while keeping an eye on their children, the county said.

While each station varies, there are five separate pieces of exercise equipment for the parks:

The Air Strider allows for a striding motion to improve hip and lower-body flexibility; it also tones legs and the gluteal muscles and provides a no-impact cardio workout.

The elliptical machine provides a low-impact cardio workout; it improves full-body flexibility while toning arms, waist, hips, calves and oblique, gluteal and quadriceps muscles.

The Knee Raise Dip Combo provides an abdominal workout and back stretch; users can perform a knee raise on one side and dips, stretching and pull-ups on the other.

The Arm and Leg Press Combo is a resistance unit that allows for a lower and upper body workout; the user can change the resistance by changing body positioning.

The Pull Up Dip Combo provides for multi-height pull-ups, chin-ups and stretches with a dip station that strengthens and tones the arms, chest, shoulders and back.

Here are the locations of the stations in each park:

Boyce — Near the Oblock universal playground along Center Road.

Deer Lakes — One fitness station is in a linear configuration around the lower lake; the other is near the universal playground by Minnow Shelter.

Harrison Hills — By the playground near Overlook Shelter and Watts Memorial Overlook.

North — Next to the universal playground by the swimming pool.

Round Hill — Next to the universal playground by Bluegrass Shelter.

Settlers Cabin — By the universal playground near Moccasin Shelter.

South — One station is next to the universal, black-and-yellow playground along Corrigan Drive. The other is in a linear configuration along Corrigan Drive from the children’s playground parking lot at Brownsville Road along the trail to where Corrigan intersects with McConkey Road.

White Oak — Next to the universal playground near Cedar 2 Shelter.

On a semi related note, has there ever been talk about renovating the fitness trail at north park?

Some of the public parks on Isla Mujeres have these outdoor cardio machines. The locals make good use of them. I'd like to see some in our city parks.
