The city is poised to purchase a $400,000 fireboat to battle blazes along the three rivers, according to Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich. He said the boat would be used for fires on water and along the shore. Pittsburgh last had a fireboat in 1973.

“We looked at some incidents not only in the city, but outside of the city where a fireboat would have been useful,” Hissrich said.

Seems like it could be a wise investment. However, I would think it would be better to pool the purchase - I would think this may be better as a County-level asset and that perhaps financial assistance could come from PEMA, FEMA, USDOT, or perhaps even the Corps of Engineers.

Any posters involved in the fire community with thoughts to share?

I mean, I'm all for public safety, but are blazes along the riverfront common enough to need to buy the boat, pay the maintenance, fuel, crew, etc which are all going to be much more then fire vehicles.
I'll assume someone did an analysis somewhere to determine this makes sense.

Oakmont, Verona and Springdale all have fireboats, but we are talking about suburbs and not the cash strapped city. I think the city shouldn't do it and let the suburb folks take care of the issues on the waters. Just no money in the city proper to afford such luxuries.

Just think, if this happened in a suburb area this poor guy may still have his boat.
