Is there any areas in Pittsburgh, preferably north, that have a off leash dog area for small dogs.

We took our 3 pound Yorkshire Terrier puppy to North Park and she did OK but was scared by all of the big dogs. This in itself is not the biggest problem as she has been pretty adaptable to new things once she has a chance to get used to it. However we are also worried of our very small dog getting hurt during normal play with dogs much bigger than her.

There are two location in north park and one of them does have a small dog area (last time we where there with friends) but it is currently closed.

Are there any other off leash areas that cater specifically to small dogs?

I can't help you, but as the owner of a demanding Dachshund I'm also curious if anyone else has any insight!

A cockapoo got eaten by a greyhound in Frick Park's dog run. Rough crowd.

South Park has a small dog area you can close off from the main area. Every time I have been there (30-40 times), the gates are open and no one is in that area. I'm sure you can close the gates and make it your own.

Wanting her to play with other dogs is equally important as letting her run free.

Also does anyone know why or how long the other north park off-leash area is closed?

Riverview Park has a separate small dog enclosure. Edit: it's nice and large and shaded by large trees.

Does it get used much?

Also looking at the map its close to the observatory, is the road to the observatory still under construction?

Not sure, It's fairly quiet when we go, which is typically weekends before 9AM. Judging by the depletion of the grassy area it must be used quite a bit. There are water bowls and some benches, it's a nice park. I think the driveway to the Observatory may still be under construction, but a walk from the street up to the park is nothing at all.
