It;s going to cost me $1400 for up to 1000 lbs (studio apartment contents) to move from Carson City, NV to Pittsburgh PA and it will take them about 9-14 days to arrive.

So I am going on a little trip. I am going to drive from NV to PA

Doing this in May 2008

I figure that be the best time to go with the weather being nicer and also a great holiday.

That's a pretty good deal, NYSTYLE! So you will be driving your car, and that's a cool experience. Some of the ranges of price in moving costs from Ca. to Pa. range in the $5000 area..and that's if I choose to drive my car myself, too. Driving is a good option, as I drove out here from Pa. and got to see a lot of America and many parts of 'old Route 66' along Route 40. Taking turns with a friend of mine at the time, it only took us 5 days, as we spent a day and night to see the Grand Canyon, and spent a night in New Mex. on the way. Keep us posted on your experience and how it goes when you are settling in to your new home. :-)

Make sure you have the phone numbers for the various police and rescues around the Rockies, and some good maps to figure out alternative routes -- take some warm blankets and pack yourself water and food stuff. I know around Yosemite there are roads that don't open until mid June, and snow squalls can come up quickly sometimes, so be prepared.

Other than that -- I'm jealous! Nothing I like better than a road trip!

Thank you all for the kind and helpful replies.

I will be going from Carson City and through Utah on I-80 I have a GPS system to help me get to Pittsburgh. I don't think I will be passing Yosemite. But, I will be in some wilderness kinda places sort of speak...lol Thanks again for the advise on packing etc.

As per the moving company I called a few places and went through a consolodator who brokers bigger companies who have extra room for smaller loads. who are heading in the same direction.

I know you won't be near Yosemite, but when my husband went through the Rockies coming out here to CA he wasn't expecting snow and he ended having to AROUND the Rockies --- added a few days to the trip; and one really weird phone call from Barstow where he had sunstroke and claimed he followed Cher through the Mojave desert on Rte 40...
