Hello All- I'm going to be retiring from the Army in December of 2017 and I'd like to move to Pittsburgh. My situation is I have dogs retiring with me (4) and I need to have room for training. I don't have kids however and I don't care about good schools. What I'm after is:
-some land, an acre would be great but that's tough because:
-I'd like to be able to walk to a place like Lawrenceville/Squirrel Hill, etc., grab a beer/lunch/coffee/that kind of thing; regular person stuff. A walk means a couple miles, I'd like to not own a car, but will if I have to
-I don't care about schools, no kids. I don't mind if there are good schools, maybe I'll go back
-I don't want to deal with shooting/crime. Random is ok, no daily stuff that I can count on though, had enough for my life time.
-I'd like to spend less than $450K, preferably less than 10 bucks, but $450K is ok.
-I'd hope taxes are low since the schools in my fantasy land suck.
I REALLY APPRECIATE ANY ADIVICE!!! I've read City-Data now since I've been back and it's a huge batch of information, rock on! KwazyKwown (the Simpsons airline)

More than a quarter of an acre is going to be really difficult unless you piece together lots and parcels.

I think you maybe stuck in fantasy land. I did a quick search and found a few in shaler and one in reserve, definitely not walkable.

Given your preferences, you might want to rethink Pittsburgh. There are quite a few smaller cities in PA where it would actually be feasible to obtain what you want.

not super common but possible.

there is one in way upper lawrenceville thats under contract with over an acre. .75 very usable acre on the hazelwood/greenfield border is best active atm that would be under 2 miles to the murray/forbes intersection.
the quality of pittsburgh city schools doesn't really reflect in the taxes though.

definitely not impossible, but fairly rare. You will just need to keep on the look out when you are ready to move forward. I have seen a few places that meet your criteria over the past few years.

Your most likely going to be on the fringes of the neighborhoods you want to be in. The cores of most desirable neighborhoods you will be very hard pressed to find anything over .25 acre.

Do you need to personally own an acre, or do you just want to be surrounded by undeveloped land?

If the latter is the case, you will have a lot more luck. A lot of the houses on windy roads with steep slopes are very isolated. The lots themselves aren't huge, but the surrounding lots are often city owned and have returned to nature. In many cases new hillside zoning rules preclude the land from being developed even if it's held by a private property owner.

Zillow lists 300+ homes in Allegheny County with at least 1 acre of ground. Why must you be able to walk to Squirrel Hill? Do you know of a decent deli there?
