I've found some options for you for <$700/month for a pet-friendly 1-BR.

Residences of South Hills (Baldwin):

★★ 1 bedroom!! ★★

Avalon:

*********1BR/1BA Apartment For Rent Available Now - Avalon***

Creekside Gardens (Penn Hills):

2 Bedroom Townhouse**End Unit**Updated

Port Vue:

BEAUTIFUL HOME FOR RENT

Troy Hill (gentrifying city neighborhood):

Spacious 2 Bedroom 1 Bath Troy Hill

McKeesport (don't think it's the safest part):

Spacious 2Br/1Ba in Cristi Park

Pineview Apartments (Baldwin):

!!PET FRIENDLY STUDIO!!

I think you should stay <$700/month simply because most units will NOT include gas & electric. Our local utility costs tend to be a bit exorbitant. Our average monthly gas heat bill in the winter months is ~$150 but can be $200+ if the month is brutally cold like we had a couple of winters ago. These older units you'll find at this price point will be sort of stuffy/muggy in the summer, so window A/C units will be a must. Those will really raise your summer electric bills. We also have to pay for water & sewage with our unit, which is becoming increasingly common as well. Also don't be surprised here if for some reason rentals charge extra for a refrigerator and oven. I've never before seen a city where rentals are advertised with kitchens WITHOUT appliances, but absentee slumlords are everywhere here.

never said it was a good idea, I specifically said she would be completely paycheck to paycheck and it would be scary. But I know people who currently do it, so it is possible, just not advisable.

OP, here are a couple. there are still reasonable priced places to find. just gotta look harder than you did 5 years ago.

It should probably be noted I don't want to live in the city itself. I am not a city living type of girl.

I think you will be fine. Verona, Sharpsburg, Sprindale, Etna and Blawnox come to mind, not to mention places a little further out with some room to roam. This forum has a lot of very pro city people trying to force people into living in the fashionable east end. Skip that and live in a suburb that is a little more quiet and affordable.

Does anyone know anything about the Nineteen North apartments? They say they are in McCandless Twp. There one bedrooms are pretty cheap. Under 900 a month.

https://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/apa/5924948999.html there are some great places for rent for a good price. This place is located in a very safe area, it is within walking distance to any amenity needed and is huge. You don't need to spend so much money on rent.

great area and only getting nicer. closer to the city than cranberry with just as many amenities but far enough away from the hustle and bustle of McKnight road.

Good. That will open up many more possibilities for you because decent 1-BR apartments in the suburbs tend to be cheaper than decent 1-BR apartments in the city these days. I'd definitely recommend 19North in McCandless to you.
