I am just questioning a commitment to higher education, especially at the Art Institute (which I thought closed) to learn photography.

I would suggest a dual major at Point Park University, with film, or business, or something that would pad your academic cred.
I second this opinion.

I don't think it's right to dismiss a formal education for something like photography - I get it, we live in an age where everybody thinks that they are a photographer is they have a DSLR camera, but that's not reality.

That said, I don't trust most for profit higher education places and the Art Institute's parent company (sadly based in Pgh I believe) has had to shut down many schools for sketchy reasons.

I would look at non profit schools or ask professional photographers for advice on what to do.

Agree.

Photography isn't a career where a bachelor's is needed, unless it was something very specialized like photojournalism or science related. What about Pittsburgh Filmmakers. They have an 8-month program.

You could get a tour and ask them about some of their alumni positions, successes, etc.
