The best candidate did not get the job. Black candidates with more education and less infractions got passed by for less qualified white male candidates. It was a systematic pattern perpetrated by other white men to ensure whiteness among the ranks. Its nothing new. We have been shut out of employment opportunities since the end of slavery. Race should not matter but apparently it does. It took a lawsuit and 1.6 million dollars to correct the issue. Now we have 30% minority participation.

Thank you, I will!

You meant, in your opinion, correct? There are myriad others who would disagree! At the risk of being redundant, I repeat: IMHO the Washington Post provides comprehensive information and is a fine example of journalistic integrity. I find it to be an excellent source for reporting of current and civic events for anyone interested in thinking and formulating their own rigorously determined or in depth opinions. It has a long and trusted history of gathering, assessing, and presenting news and information.

I find it dispiriting that institutions and print newspapers that still provide actual facts and deep background and continue to subscribe to a journalistic code of ethics are daily under attack these days, and dismissed in such a manner as you just did. Just my 2 cents.

Anyway, you asked for facts and sources, and the answer from CharisB was to provide a credible source. You chose to not read it and discredit the source and label it by name calling...Hmmm, what is the phrase I am looking for and seeing tweeted these days? Oh here it is: Sad!

You must've missed the word "now" as again, all one has to do now is get the job based on merit.

However, the suit claiming that 17% wasn't a big enough number is quite ridiculous. At least taxpayers complaining about it got to help pay the $1.6m.

No. Discriminatory hiring practices is quite ridiculous. 1.6 million was a small price to pay considering the increased minority participation going forward.

Hopefully for you, since it's based on merit, your preferred race is the most qualified in the future.

No. Equal opportunity without regard to race.

Great to hear you're accepting of that.

I had the pleasure of sitting in on classes with recruits at the academy in Fall 2016. The class was diverse, and, more importantly, they seemed to genuinely be excited to soon be sworn in to serve and protect our city.

We're heading in the right direction.

For the record, while I don't normally agree with gg on everything I do like his idea for a Homewood police substation manned primarily by African-American officers. It is inarguably the most violent neighborhood in the city, and its population is nearly 100% African-American. Perhaps wayward male youths in the neighborhood being exposed to positive black male role models on foot patrol in their neighborhood will help them to see that there are indeed opportunities for professional advancement for men of color in this city after all.

It's a shame that despite all the good the Peduto Administration has done so far for this city he is so anti-police. The city's rapid gentrification, which everyone on here thinks is the best thing since sliced bread, is only going to continue so far as long as violent crime remains a concern. If what someone on the general PA forum is true---that Pittsburgh had a higher per capita homicide rate in 2016 than Philadelphia---then this is quite troubling and should be a wake-up call for Peduto to stop messing with the police and support staff.

I beg your pardon, but I thought we agreed on everything? We are both white males.
