Yeah, Pittsburgh is very tricky--lots of quick transitions between desirable and not-as-desirable neighborhoods, and of course the real estate folks tend to define the more desirable neighborhoods broadly (and the less desirable neighborhoods narrowly) to suit their purposes.

Incidentally, that map goes along with this map (actually, a set of maps), which is more or less the "official" map of Pittsburgh neighborhoods:

Pittsburgh Map

You can click on any neighborhood in the city-wide map to get its individual map, and then click to get a PDF version which you can zoom into (useful for identifying exact borders). So, for example, here is Shadyside PDF:

http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/cp/.../shadyside.pdf

I find that is the best way to try to figure out if a place you find online is really where it says it is according to the "official" map (you can map the address and then compare). That said, I think in some cases the unofficial neighborhood definitions make more sense than the "official" ones (the "official" ones are being driven in part by U.S. census tracts, not always local custom and neighborhood attributes). But hopefully all this at least helps.

I hope you enjoy your visit. Obviously it is going to be different, but in the end I think there is actually a lot of natural beauty to be had in Pittsburgh, including with respect to natural water, and I would list that as one of its top aesthetic qualities (along with the historic neighborhoods and nice views).

I know that this thread is a few years old and I would have loved to find out how it turned out because I will be moving to Pitt from Cali. This thread has been extremely helpful and I am considering all that Amanda was considering. I probably won't see any replies but I will post how things worked out for me in a few months.

SF GIANTS RULE! 2 World Series Championships in 3 years. Awesome.

I'm going to miss them terribly when I move. I know this is off topic, but it seemed to be the most appropriate thread. What a send off for me on my journey to Pittsburgh. If the 49ers make it to the Superbowl, I can't even express what that would be like for a San Francisco native like me.

In all honesty, you can be a SF Giants fan and nobody would really care given how long the Pirates have been irrelevant who knows, you may be able to get some of your neighbors to become Giants fans haha

Cool. We can watch the game at my place. I'm going to have to order some kind of special baseball package so I can watch Giants' games. One of my friends here in CA streams Phillies games on her computer. That's probably my best option.

As a Tigers fan, having grown up in Detroit, I will just say: blech.
