Aren't you Mr East End Affordable Housing? You seem to be obsessed with creating affordable housing in neighborhoods that gentrified largely through owner occupants selling and cashing out, yet you seem unmoved by the one case of East End gentrification that involved mass evictions.

Wasn't this supposed to be GOOD gentrification, though, because in exchange for displacing the tenants of Penn Plaza the developer was going to kick in millions towards the development of an even greater number of NEW low-income units in and around East Liberty than were destroyed for the Whole Foods project?

It's not like in Polish Hill or Lawrenceville (or half the city these days for that matter) where rich whites are kicking out poor whites block by block while saying "too bad; so sad; take a hike!" with NO new affordable housing units going up in these neighborhoods to house those being displaced.

This simply isn't happening in appreciable numbers.

Agreed. I would venture to guess many of the "poor whites" leaving for "rich whites" are owner occupants or owners that inherited property from elderly family members that passed. Most of the single family attached and single family detached homes that I am aware of in Lawrenceville and Polish Hill are owner-occupied. Gentrification is occurring when new owner-occupants or flippers are buying and improving property, not when landlords are raising rents and forcing people out.

This is wildly different than tearing down subsidized rentals without replacement in areas with similar levels of access.

You guys, that doesn't play into SCR's narrative of being the victim.

I've honestly begun thinking that SCR should set up a GoFundMe for a down payment on his house. I'm sure a lot of forumites (including myself) would contribute - partially to go a good deed, and partially just to change the subject.

LG Realty is appealing in state court to try and overrule the Planning Commission's ruling.

This seems like a pretty boneheaded move to me, because if they lose the ruling, they will have completely destroyed trust in the neighborhood, making it all but impossible to develop a new proposal.

I wouldn't be surprised if they knock down the other building in the spring even if they don't have a plan at this rate, just out of spite.

Yes, they are, but I still want to see this area developed beyond the mess created in the 60s and they rightfully own the land.

These community groups need to give up on this land and focus on working with the City for affordable housing on nearby lots.
