Stay away from obvious troublemakers and you're fine. It's easy at that time of night because the buses are basically vacant.
I don't know why anyone would prefer walking through a dangerous area as opposed to riding the bus through it. Maybe I'm naive but you don't hear about a lot of muggings or assaults happening on the bus, and you've at the very least got the bus driver and probably riders around you instead of just you yourself walking down the street. I take the 81B through the Hill District all the time because it's the easiest way to get to/from downtown from where I live. No I probably wouldn't take it at 3AM (if it even ran then) but if it was that opposed to walking, I'd take the bus in a heartbeat. It's funny though because any time I mention that I take that route people look at me like I am crazy, like I will be killed or become addicted to crack or something by riding the bus through a bad neighborhood. It's ridiculous.

Default Apartments at Broad St. (East Liberty?)

New to Pittsburgh looking for a decent (read safe) area for an apartment to move into along with my wife.
Any clue about Bates St (Fairfield Apartments)? and surrounding area. Is the area safe considering my late night/evening commutes from the town and wife being alone all day at home?

Suggestions/opinions appreciated..!
