Every time I go to the Hotel Indigo for happy hour or jazz it seems lively. The bar and restaurant appears packed.

That is true but most of the attendees are guests. I believe eschaton was referring to Indigo Square which is the retail across from the Hotel. I frequent the area as well and do realize that is in transition.

I know the woman who owns the olive oil shop in Indigo Square. As her front window basically is directly across from Hotel Indigo, she is able to see people come and leave the hotel. She confirmed to me that there's generally very little foot traffic coming in and out - even in nice weather. The jazz nights may be past her closing time however.

Indigo Square is an example of the city failing to augment private development. There is some clumsy temporary fence up, I'm guessing to prevent people from parking for free. It just gives off a "closed" vibe.

That needs to be an extension of Broad St. Return the street grid!

I'm a big fan of their olive oil. Olive and Marlowe.

I love their stuff too. I'm not a big salad fan, but I get their oil and vinegar for cooking and occasional bread dipping.

She apparently signed a seven-year lease when the building was refurbished, which she is now five years into. While the lease terms were much more affordable than other options she considered (like opening in Lawrenceville) she's never gotten the foot traffic she was promised due to the isolated location. It sounded to me like she was strongly considering moving the business in two years - perhaps to Sharpsburg, where she lives now with her family.

How so? I thought the developer wanted the street vacated, and the city agreed.

I'm not sure what street vacating you are referring to but Broad St West of N. Highland is still accessible by car. Whatever was supposed to happen to the public elements of Indigo Square clearly has not. There is a 100 foot temporary fence making it look like there is no retail next to the Hotel.

Have you been over there? The street looks bad and the buildings look great.

I looked online and confirmed that the street is still a public right of way, not vacated. The mini-parking lot in the front of the building is owned by the URA however, which might explain part of why it looks like butt.

I also read that somewhere also. I don't think downtown hotels are doing very well. What downtown needs is parking. Our parking rates are outrageous compared to similar cities.
