I'm considering a job in Oakland that would require occasional visits (once every 2 weeks?) to a facility in Robinson Twnshp. I don't have a car currently and hoping that if I move to Pittsburgh I could stay car-free. Is Uber or Lyft an option for a Oakland to Robinson route in the morning and back in the afternoon? If so, how long do you typically have to wait for a ride? Is it reliable? - I don't want to be stuck out there.

Google maps says there is a Robinson bus, but it doesn't stop close enough to be useable. Would taxis be an option for this route? Out here taxis only want to do airport trips. Other ideas for this commute would be welcome - thank you!

Yes, Uber or Lyft from Oakland to Robinson would be easy. Lots of drivers hang around in Oakland (students) and at the airport (near Robinson).

Very reliable during normal work hours. Expect anywhere from $25-$55 each way depending on the surge. I’ve seen higher, but only when events are going on like a Steeler game, playoff Penguins game, and New Years. I take round trips to and from the airport about 2-3 times a month with no issue.

You might also look into the Zipcar program as an option.

You could also take the 28x bus from Oakland to Robinson Town Center near Ikea and take a cheaper Uber to your ultimate destination.

That's what I've done for the airport. 28x to oakland and then an uber / lyft to east liberty.

Thanks for the great feedback. Glad that there are options to get out there without owning a car. I may have to get one eventually for other reasons, but would like to at least try living in Pittsburgh without a car.

The bus idea is interesting. I've taken the 28x before when visiting. Let's say I have a 10 am meeting in Robinson... If I catch a bus at 8:30 in Oakland, get to Robinson by 9:15, could I count on having an Uber ready-to-go, someone willing to drive me only a mile out there? Or it safer to catch the Uber in Oakland to take me directly? (I've never used Uber or Lyft before.)

Oakland as an area should be okay I believe as (part of it) is along with Univ of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon.

To use Uber or Lyft, you need to have a smartphone. If you do, download the app (choose the app that is NOT driver). You can also PM me for a promo code so that you get additional funds to start with (I believe I would get additional funds as well).

I would recommend Lyft over Uber- the app is easier to use, the quality of customer service is much more reasonable overall. Drivers tend to be more personable overall.

At this very moment 1 PM EST on a Friday, it is an 8 minute wait for an uber in Robinson and 3 minutes for a Lyft.
