I do understand the concerns of living next to a noisy place, its odd that someone would move there knowing it though. Maybe the neighbor has some other kind of beef with the place? The city would probably be smart to revisit the zoning and keep busineses that have no residents next to bars and music venues.

Maybe they didn’t know it? It’s not like people tour houses late at night.

Personally it seems like a pretty black & white issue. The law states a certain decibel level an establishment can be; the place was either exceeding this or not. Whether the place was there 1 year or 100 years has no bearing on the matter & likewise whether a complaining neighbor is new or not also makes no difference.

If they are so dumb they didn't even check out the attached buildings before deciding to move there, then they deserve it.

Yeah I didn't say it made any difference how long anyone has been there - I said the city would be smart to revisit its zoning rules and adjust to avoid this in the future.

But I can't think of any examples offhand where this a problem in denser neighborhoods like the South Side or Lawrenceville or Bloomfield where there are plenty of live music venues mixed in with residential buildings.

It's just hard for me to imagine anyone moving in without knowing exactly what James Street does -- I mean, there's a big sign and it's not exactly a secret. I still suspect it's a longtime resident who doesn't like that the neighborhood is getting to be more lively, but of course since it's just one jerk it's anyone's guess why they decided to be a hater.

If I move somewhere I don’t see that it’s my due diligence to ensure that my neighbors to be are breaking the law or not. Like I said it’s a black & white issue; either the establishment is fulfilling its requirements regarding noise ordinances & should not be harassed or is not & should suffer the consequences. No other detail matters.

I’ve been there a few times; have nothing against the place but also don’t see why it in particular should have to follow different rules then any other business.

Ummm, if you live around James St Gastropub you might be more concerned over the rampant drug use, dealing, and prostitution all around you....those are much bigger issues around there outside of James St and on Cedar/East Ohio St than any noise from James St....priorities are out of whack.

I've never actually eaten there, but have enjoyed drinks and music on and off over the past 20 years, and fortunate to have a private show coming up there with a bunch of friends here in a few weeks to fully celebrate some great music in a historical Pittsburgh spot. If we want to really get into nuisance bars, I am sure someone could generate research on bars in Pittsburgh where shootings occur from time to time, and they are still open...

Right, but this is exactly what I mean when I say the neighborhood is changing fast. Almost all of the bars on East Ohio Street are gone now; those buildings are being renovated and will almost certainly be replaced by more upscale options. The only bar that's still there as far as I know is the Park House, and they tend to attract a pretty sensible crowd. The presence of drugs and prostitution is way down; you can still find it but it's much less visible than it was even two or three years ago. I'm sure there are some nuisance bars still open all over Pittsburgh, but not so much in Deutschtown. Even the old Recovery Room has been replaced by a pretty nice Hungarian restaurant.

I agree. Why isn't it cut and dry. They are in compliance or they aren't period. People can complain all day long, but if they are on compliance it shouldn't matter.
