Good Morning, Greater Pittsburghers,

I have yet to start my Christmas shopping due to some unforeseen circumstances (shame on me), but I plan to do approximately half of it this weekend and half next weekend.

This year I'd like to do as much of my shopping from smaller independent merchants as possible and only resort to Amazon or a big-box/chain retailer as a last resort for some requested items that I know a local shop won't carry.

What are some of your favorite local stores? I'm looking for options within a one-hour drive of Downtown Pittsburgh.

I'm already considering Ten Thousand Villages in Squirrel Hill for a gift for my great aunt. Yes, I know this one is technically a "chain", but it's a good chain with a mission that helps others.

What stores do Oakmont, Sewickley, Aspinwall, Carnegie, Dormont, Crafton, Mt. Lebanon, Greensburg, or Beaver, for example, have that would be worth my drive to do some browsing? I'm considering taking a stroll up and down Butler Street, too, but I already have a feeling most boutiques in Lawrenceville are going to be exorbitant in pricing.

Thanks!

I like Wild Card on Butler St for small gifts as well as cards. I don’t find their prices to be too high. I do think many of the clothing boutiques have high-ish prices but sometimes you can get a good deal with items on sale. Also, Brambler on Butler St is great for anyone in the family who may have very young children. They carry books, small toys, kid gadgets (to make parents lives easier), etc.

Patiti Inti on Murray ave in Squirrel hill. Love their alpaca gloves. Super light and warm. They have beautuful scarves, and jewelery too. The lady there usually has a sale on this time of the year but her prices are very reasonable.

I also love the Blue Monkey Tea (formerly Margaret's Fine Imports) store on Forbes. They sell many kinds of tea as well as tea sets and unique gifts and treats.

Game Stop on Murray for a wide assortment of games, board games etc.

The whole forbes and Murray corridor has lots of cool little shops so worth taking the drive.

Logan Family Farms in Greensburg for really great home grown beef and pork products. Best steaks I have ever had.

Sarris's candy in Cannonsburg. Not as small a business but it is a locally owned family business that employs many of the locals. Their shop has a huge selection of wonderful treats. The ice cream shop is great too. If you go be sure to get a hard cap sundae.

Wigle Whiskey has a sales room in the Omni.

Visit Pittsburgh is in an office on the first floor of the Highmark Building - there is also a photographer's shop there too (selling beautiful pictures of Pgh). Visit sells Pittsburgh gifts and souvenirs. The Heinz History Center also has a nice gift shop full of uniquely Pittsburgh gifts.

Steel City Clothing is on Smithfield St - across from the library and SW Randall. They have Pittsburgh-themed t-shirts.

There is also of course the Christmas Market: https://www.peoples-gas.com/holiday-...ndors_2017.pdf

These are all options that you can easily walk to from your office during a lunch break.

The Glass Center in Garfield has lots of very good, local items for gifts. Assuming you like glass things.

Get a gift card for the classic Hollywood Theater in Dormont. A great place (with balcony!) to catch a movie and some yummy snacks. You can have dinner at Thai Spoon beforehand, the best in Pittsburgh.
