I agree about Pittsburgh's diversity, but so are most cities of a comparable size in the Midwest.
And even though I think you are technically correct about Appalachia, Pittsburgh in fact is the only city in this part of Appalachia (with Knoxville being the only city in the other part). So, that is sort of a city effect as well.

Glad you like it. To me it seems like this area is split half and half. It splits spouses, families, co-workers, and neighbors around here. One of my best friends is a steelers fan, along w/her son, her husband, other son, and daughter are browns fans.
There was actually a time in my life when i said i would never date a Pittsburgh fan, but i have and it actually wasn't that bad. HAHA!
So, if any of you single Pittsburgh fans out there don't mind dating a Browns fan, I'm available! haha!

Tough question. I answered "Midwestern" accidentally, because my gut reaction in that Pittsburgh's attitude, economy and culture are most like a Midwest city. I would define Western PA as being the far Eastern edge of the Midwest, from a cultural standpoint. Central, PA is an extension of Appalachia. That being said, Pittsburghers probably consider themselves to be more Northeastern, just because we are in a "Northeastern" state.

We don't associate ourselves with anything or anyone Midwestern. It's akin to stepping in dog poo. Only outsiders try to label us as a Midwestern city. We're as Midwestern as we are Southern.

I'd define it as being the far western edge of the Northeast. I'm from Ohio, and Pittsburgh is different from the Midwest.

It's even more different from a city like Philadelphia or Boston.
